Hi, all,
My friend and self-supporting artist, Steven Derks, will be leading a discussion on, well, marketing art in Tucson, at the Wilmot Library this Thursday evening 6-8 p.m.
I'm planning on attending, and have invited Phil Miller along. Anyone else interested in carpooling or caravaning?

Party, party, party!
There's a kick-off party for the Studio Tour at Candace's house this coming Sunday at 3 p.m. That's 12255 W. Sunset Road. If you're not sure where it is, check the map on the flyer I sent, or the TPAC Tour map.
Bring some finger food to share.
Also bring multiple business cards to trade with everyone. I will have your color PRAG flyer there, and it has a slot for everyone's cards.
This is a celebration/strategy meeting for all PRAG members and significant others. See you there!

Flyers ready!
Hi, all!
The BW flyers are ready to go. I had 100 printed at 20¢ apiece on a bright heavy paper stock. They're suitable for posting on a bulletin board, or folded into thirds and mailed.
Let me know how many you want. If that totals more than 100 for the 6 of us, I'll have more printed.
You can come pick them up at my house, just call before. Heck, in a pinch, I'll drop them off at your houses.
The more we get out the better!
And I still have a BUNCH of the official color Studio Tour cards to distribute.
Anyone else getting excited about this? :-)

Last chance to get work in for pre-Tour show
I just dropped off a piece at Galeria Mistica for the pre-Tour show. Wow, what a great space it is.
You can put in a piece up to 34x40". It doesn't cost anything, the kickoff party is there November 6, and you can take your piece home after the party. Deadline to get it in is 7 p.m. Wednesday (15th) night.
I know that Candace plans to get a piece in. It would be cool if all of us were represented. Just a thought.
You're welcome to call me if you need more info: 260-8075.
I've also got BUNCH of handout cards from TPAC with the info, dates, times, etc. for both the tour and kickoff party. Please take some off my hands. Email or call and we'll arrange getting them to you.
PRAG flyers will be available very soon.

Featured Portfolio
I have the privilege of having the Featured Portfolio today, on the international site for artists, Art Bistro. :-)
You can check it out at http://www.artbistro.com/
Also, I did the majority of the layout for PRAG's flyer for the Open Studio Tour last night. If any of you want to send me a .jpg of your work to include you may... otherwise I'll use what's on the TPAC site.
I will give you a color flyer to post in your studio for the Tour, plus a stack of B&W flyers showing an easily read map to everyone's studios. Copies of this will be available to send out to your mailing lists.

The Studio Tour map is up!
Have you seen it? It's here.
Wow, everyone, PRAG looks great! Congrats to Judy Nakari, Phil Miller, Ron Schoonejongen, Candice Greenburg, Sherry Bryant (and me) for getting work up and making us look so good!
Randy
PS. I can get your addresses and phone numbers from the Tour map to make a PRAG map, but please send me a digital copy of your work! Thanks.

Studio Tour perks
Hi, all,
Studio Tour is coming up in a couple of months, the first after the formation of PRAG.
I know that several of you are participating. Here's what I'd like to do for us all.
I think we should have a flyer available at all locations, with a map showing every PRAG open studio and including an example of each artist's work. I will be happy to put this together for all of us. Please just send me your studio's address, a photo of your work, and a one-sentence description of your work (in general). If you'd like, I'll also list phone numbers.
This should be fun....

New member
This just in from Judy Nakari:
We have a new PRAGger! Her name is Sherry Bryant and she lives on Lakayucca. She has registered to be in open studio, and indicated that she is a PRAG member.
Welcome Sherry!

Time to register for the Tour

Here it is folks, plenty early, but time to register for the Open Studio Tour in November.
Here's your link to the registration form.
I suggest that whatever else we put into the "Please enter your message" box, that we include at the end, "I am a member of PRAG."
There is a bit of sticker shock this year, as entry has been upped to $45/person. :-/ The good thing is that if we register now we'll be included in the TPAC Arts Calendar, and benefit from all the other publicity that TPAC coordinates.
In addition, I'll put together a PRAG flyer with a detailed map and examples of work that will be available for all of us to have and distribute at our studios, and that can also be used as a notice for local bulletin boards.
Let's get a bunch of us (and any other artists we know) to sign up!

Fall Open Studio Tour
I just got this from TPAC today:
Plans are underway now for the TPAC Open Studios Tour 2008 (OST 2008.) This year's Tour will be spearheaded by Karen Christensen from the TPAC Board, Luanne Withee, from TPAC staff and Angela Rose, artist (and previous TPAC Board Member.) Although these names are out in front, much work goes on behind the scenes by all TPAC staff, Board Members, sponsors, and participating artists to make OST one of the most successful city/county-wide events in Tucson.
For those of you, who are interested in adding your energy and ideas to OST 2008, please attend the steering committee meeting on Wednesday, May 14th at 4pm in the downtown offices of Lewis & Roca, One South Church, Suite 700. The main topics of discussion will be: 1) an increase in fees to cover rising costs, 2) possible venues for the preview exhibition, and 3) aiming for a national profile for Tour artists.
We'd like to get an approximate number for seating, so please RSVP to Angela Rose by 5/12 if you plan to attend, email: Angela@AngelaRose.org or telephone: 906-8708.
This will be the ONLY committee meeting for the 2008 Tour. All committee work is handled via email and telephone. This worked well last year, and seems to inspire more participation.
We'd talked about doing our own tour, but I'm wondering if this fall we shouldn't go for getting good Picture Rocks participation in the TPAC one, and have PRAG promotional materials at our individual studios.
What think thee?

Urgent! Please read and act!
Judy Nakari sent me a disturbing email this morning; some of you might have gotten it too.
This is not an internet hoax. It's real, and if you're an artist, it affects your livelihood.
Under current copyright law, in effect for the last 30 years, your visual art is copy protected whether or not it is registered or carries the copyright symbol.
This week, the U.S. House of Representatives is expected to introduce the Orphan Works Act of 2008. If you care about protecting your work, you're against it. It will have the effect of wiping out any copyright on visual art now in existence, throwing your work into the public domain. If you wish to protect your work (each and every separate piece) you will have to digitize it and register it with private sector registries as yet uncreated, for a fee as yet unestablished. I say registries because this bill places no limit on how many separate registries there could be.
An interview with Brad Holland of the Illustrator's Partnership is here.
What can we do? The fastest, easiest thing is to sign a petition here.
For those of you more ambitious, here is contact info for our Representatives:
Gabrielle Giffords: 881-3588 or (202) 225-2542 or send an email through here.
Raul Grijalva: 622-0198 or 202-225-2435 or email through here.
Feel free to pass this on.
Sincerely,
Randy

An extraordinary event (in addition to Phil's party)
Hi, everybody,
I invite you to read my blog post for the Citizen called "An extraordinary event."
The event is Saturday night, more or less concurrent with Phil's party. Lisa and I will be swinging by there to do some filming before we go to Phil's.
Then we hope to see you at the party!

PRAG logo, take 2
I've gotten feedback from several of you on the logo (including Tony weighing in from ROME!).
I've heard more or less the same thing from each of you;
1. In general, love it!
2. Just what is that blob on the right that annoys me? :-)
Well, the blob was inspired by a mesquite tree, but that's academic as it will be disappearing soon.
How's this?

Best to all! Randy

Spring Open Artists' Studio Tour
Friday, April 11, is the last day to register to participate in the May Open Studio Tour.
Though members of PRAG agreed that we could not participate as a whole for this one, it's still possible to participate individually. I've decided to do it, and just registered.
I think it's a great opportunity to promote PRAG, so I'll have handouts and a sign-up sheet in case anyone shows up. :-)
If anyone else wants to show, you can sign up here.
WAIT: I just saw in another place on their site that they're focusing just on DOWNTOWN this year. I have an email query into them. I'll get back with you....R.

Let's party!!!
All PRAG participants are invited to a party at Phil Miller's place, Saturday, April 19, starting at 6 p.m. The party starts at 6 because as Lisa and I can profess, it's a great place to watch the sunset!
Phil says, "Bring your dancing shoes," as he'll be clearing out his studio for that purpose. BYOB, and something to grill, and Phil will be providing treats.
Hope to see you there!

Down and dirty at the first PRAGfest

This terrific group of stellar individuals met at the Avra Valley Arboretum today and decided to form a group (not an organization or coalition) to promote the visual arts in the Picture Rocks area. Early in the get together the name Pictures Rocks Artists Group (PRAG) was agreed upon. Not a small thing.
Many things were discussed and Lisa Horner took notes. Enough said.
Randy Harris volunteered to create a logo for the group. Phil Miller drew this one on a paper plate:

No official date was set for the next meeting, but it was agreed that we would stay in touch via this blog.
